Price Sources and Currency Settings

TL;DR: Fiat, coin, and commodity prices in CoinTracking are pulled from multiple trusted sources and updated every 2–3 minutes. Prices are used for tax and performance calculations, and users can change exchange price sources and their account currency in the settings.

How are fiat currency prices determined?

Fiat prices are calculated as a weighted average market price against BTC, primarily sourced from Blockchain.com and Coindesk.com. If certain fiat currencies aren’t available there, we use official sources like xe.com.

You can override the default average price by choosing a specific exchange (for USD and EUR only):

  • EUR options: Weighted average, Bitstamp, Kraken

  • USD options: Weighted average, Bitstamp, Kraken, Coinbase Pro

These preferences can be changed in your Account Settings.

How are cryptocurrency (coin) prices calculated?

Coin prices are based on average prices from sources like CoinMarketCap, Coingecko, and WorldCoinIndex, weighted by trading volume across exchanges. Terminal or DEX-specific prices are not included.

These average prices are used for:

  • Transaction valuation at time of execution

  • Cost basis and gains/losses in tax reports

What about commodity prices?

Prices for commodities such as Gold (XAU) and Silver (XAG) come from xe.com, with full price history tracking supported.

How often are prices updated?

All price sources are refreshed every 2–3 minutes to ensure accurate real-time calculations.

Are there any limitations?

  • Only 8 digits after the decimal point are tracked for price data.

  • Coins priced below 0.00000001 may not be tracked.

  • In such cases, track them manually as giga/mega assets with custom prices

Once a ticker is assigned, it stays fixed even if the listing changes. The coin name will update, and you can identify the asset using its Contract ID on the Coin Trend Page.

Summary

CoinTracking uses volume-weighted pricing data from reliable sources for fiat, crypto, and commodities. These values drive your tax reports and portfolio analytics. You can customize source preferences and account currency directly in your settings.
