How to Enter Transactions into CoinTracking

TL;DR

To track your crypto portfolio in CoinTracking, you must first enter your transactions. You can do this by setting up automatic API import, by importing CSV files from exchanges, or manually. For API as an example find your exchange on our import page and follow the on-screen instructions to connect your API address and automatically import your trades. If you later see warnings like "Missing Transactions" or white warning rows, or notice swaps or Liquidity Pool activity that doesn't look right, check the troubleshooting section below.

What options do I have?

To use CoinTracking for tracking your portfolio performance, you need to first import or enter your transactions. You can do this on the Imports and Transactions page using one of the following three methods:

  1. **API Import **

  2. **CSV Import **

  3. **Manual Entry

    **

Method 1: API Import

For automatic syncing, connect your exchange via API:

  • On the Imports page, scroll down

  • Select your exchange and follow the API instructions provided

  • Once connected, trades will be imported automatically and updated regularly

Method 2: CSV Import

You can upload exchange data using CSV files. To do this:

  • On the Imports page, scroll down

  • Click the logo of the exchange you want to import from

  • Follow the exchange-specific instructions

Method 3: Manual Entry

Go to Transactions > Overview & Manual Import, and click the New button above the table to add a trade manually.

**Example: ** You bought 1 BTC for 95000€ ➡ Buy = 1 BTC ➡ Sell = 95000 EUR ➡ Transaction Type = Trade

Don’t Forget to Enter Fees

If your trade includes a fee, be sure to add it. Fees can affect your profit/loss calculations and should be entered in the appropriate field for each transaction.

Troubleshooting: Common Import Issues

After importing via API, CSV, blockchain sync, or manual entry, you may run into a few common issues. Here's how to understand and resolve them.

Why do I see "Missing Transactions" or white warning rows?

CoinTracking includes a Missing Transactions report that lists transactions the system flags as incomplete. A white warning row specifically means the transaction is missing its transaction partner. In other words, it's one half of a transfer (a withdrawal or a deposit) whose matching counterpart wasn't found anywhere in your account.

This typically happens with transfers between wallets or exchanges, where only one side (e.g., the outgoing withdrawal) was imported, while the corresponding incoming deposit is missing (or vice versa). To resolve this:

  • Check if the source or destination wallet/exchange is connected and fully imported.

  • If it's not connected, add the missing counterpart transaction manually so the transfer is complete on both sides.

  • Once both sides of the transfer are present, the warning row should disappear.

How do I book Liquidity Pool deposits, withdrawals, and rewards?

When you add funds to a Liquidity Pool, enter it as a transfer out of your wallet (deposit into the pool). When you withdraw your funds from the pool, enter it as a transfer back into your wallet (withdrawal from the pool). This keeps your coin balances accurate, since the coins temporarily leave your tracked balance while they're in the pool.

Any rewards you receive from providing liquidity (e.g., trading fee rewards or incentive tokens) should be entered separately as Income so they are correctly counted as taxable income and added to your holdings, rather than being mixed into the deposit/withdrawal transactions themselves.

Why does a swap transaction appear "out of nowhere"?

Sometimes a swap shows up in your transaction list with only the coin you received, but no record of the coin you gave up in exchange. It looks like the new coin appeared "out of nowhere." This usually happens when only one side of the swap was captured (for example, via blockchain sync or a partial CSV import), while the outgoing side wasn't recorded.

To fix this:

  • Add the missing side of the swap manually as a Trade (Buy = coin received, Sell = coin given away), so the swap is fully documented.

  • Double-check the exchange or blockchain source to confirm which coin was actually spent in the swap.

How do I fix missing transfers from blockchain wallets (e.g. Metamask)?

When you import a blockchain wallet address (for example, a Metamask address), CoinTracking can only see the transactions that happened on that chain/address. If you sent or received coins to/from another wallet or exchange that isn't connected in your account, one side of that transfer will be missing. This is another common cause of the "missing transaction partner" warning described above.

To resolve it:

  • Connect the other wallet or exchange involved in the transfer, if possible, so both sides import automatically.

  • If the other side can't be imported automatically, add the missing deposit or withdrawal manually to match the blockchain transaction.

  • This ensures your balances and the Missing Transactions report stay accurate.
